Chief Development Officer Overview

The Chief Development Officer is responsible for the development and implementation of effective strategies for fundraising, communications, and volunteer management to meet the fundraising targets of Penny Appeal USA. The Chief Development Officer will provide strategic leadership to the overall organization as a member of the Executive Team; and will supervise a team of nine staff including a Donor Relationship Manager, a Head of Events, a Head of Marketing & Communications, a National Volunteer Coordinator and a Community Engagement Officer.

The Chief Development Officer will be responsible for all revenue to the organization and is responsible for providing excellent customer service to donors of all levels while ensuring a high percentage of donor retention. S/he will create and execute an annual development strategy to increase support from individual donors, corporate partners and foundations while also identifying new opportunities for growth. The current annual fundraising budget is $8.5 million USD, the vast majority of which will come from individual contributions.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The Chief Development Officer will report to the Chief Executive Officer.

Design and implement a comprehensive development strategy to achieve significant revenue goals to support the mission, vision and strategic direction of the organization.

Work with development team to expand revenue from all fundraising targets to include individuals, corporations, congregations, and other community groups through direct mail, workplace giving, special events, major gifts, planned gifts, online digital marketing and other fundraising initiatives.

Work with Programs Manager to manage grant research, requests and reports for federal, state, and local government funding agencies, as well as private foundations.

Ensure that the organization has a highly functioning system for donor stewardship.

Ensure strong development operations including data entry and management, donor acknowledgments, gift processing, and income reconciliation.

Communications

Oversee the organization’s communications activities including email, press, website, social media, and marketing materials such as videos, newsletters, and annual reports.

Serve as PA USA’s secondary external spokesperson to media and community members.

Thoroughly understand and articulate PA USA’s mission and strategies to fight poverty.

Support Chief Executive Officer with written communications

Management

Manage the growing development department ensuring departmental workplans are implemented and progress is tracked.

Prepare progress and activity reports for Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors.

Work closely with the IT Architect & Systems Manager to build and improve systems for organizing and utilizing all information about past, current, and prospective donors via Salesforce dashboards and reports

Stay abreast of philanthropic and social trends on fundraising and poverty eradication issues.

Create and manage departmental budget and other financial reports as needed

Requirements Qualifications & Requirements

Graduate degree in nonprofit management, development, marketing, or related field preferred.

At least ten years of progressively responsible development and/or communications experience in a nonprofit organization, including five years in a supervisory role.

CFRE certification or equivalent is required

Track record of successfully planning and executing development strategies that secure support from individual donors, corporations and foundations

Success in raising significant individual gifts ($25k or more), corporate and foundation support

Experience with upgrading donors and building a donor pipeline

Adept at dealing with sensitive political and social situations

Experience preparing budgets and producing reports

Ability to work in fast-pace environment and ability to pivot/redirect when needed is essential

Willing and able to travel approximately 30 percent of the time

Ability to see the big picture and think strategically while also being able to execute tactical tasks

Highly organized, capable of balancing and prioritizing concurrent projects and deadlines

A strong communicator with excellent writing abilities, with emphasis on clear and compelling appeals, proposals and email requests

A natural team player who enjoys supporting and collaborating with colleagues

Knowledge of and experience working with using Salesforce or similar software as a donor database

A demonstrated interest and commitment to the mission of PA USA. Experience addressing issues of poverty and socio-economic disparities preferred

Exceptional interpersonal, organizational and multi-tasking skills; highly organized, possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Compensation and Start Date

This full-time position, based in Alexandria, VA*, offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, collaborative work environment, and a benefits package that includes vacation leave as well as medical, dental, and vision insurance. Start date is spring 2020.

*Remote applicants will be considered providing they are able to visit HQ regularly
