SSI is seeking an experienced engineer to support structural
integrity and fatigue life management for engines in development
and sustainment at the Naval Air Warfare Center - Aircraft Division
(NAWCAD), Patuxent River, MD. Be part of an exciting team making a
difference for the U.S. Naval Air Forces. As a NAWCAD Propulsion
Structures Engineer you will provide technical support to develop
new systems and support ongoing sustainment efforts for field
aircraft while mentoring journeyman engineers on component analysis
and test planning efforts in the Air Systems Group, Propulsion and
Power Department organization. Other job duties include:
- Review of aircraft mission data from the U.S. Navy Fleet to
develop engine usage spectra, validate propulsion system advanced
lifting algorithms;
- Evaluation of Aircraft / Engine original equipment manufacturer
(OEM) life prediction methodologies and corresponding results to
support airworthiness of systems in development and sustainment of
fielded assets;
- Establish propulsion system safety critical part life limits to
prevent premature failure and develop risk mitigation strategies
for field issues based on available engineering and logistical
support constraints;
- Develop turbine engine and component test plans / procedures
and execute work with limited oversight to support mitigation of
service revealed deficiencies;
- Write and execute proposals to support workforce development,
increase organic testing technologies and modeling capabilities and
approaches in line with our strategic initiatives;
- Develop well written presentations for customers explaining the
results of workforce development plans and effort;
- Present NAWCAD interests at symposiums and conferences
- US Citizen with active Secret clearance or ability to obtain a
Secret clearance
- MS or PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical or Materials Engineering,
Physics or related engineering discipline, or Bachelor's Degree and
equivalent experience in field
- Coursework or transcripts showing a specialization in one or
more of these related disciplines: heat transfer, structural
dynamics, finite element analysis, modal test, fatigue and
fracture.
- 5 or more years of experience in propulsion system structures
and fatigue life management including work areas such as:
- Failure investigations including direction and creation of Root
Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) and practical failure analysis
experience
- Fatigue and fracture methodologies including crack growth
analysis methods and material properties behavior including damage
tolerance for safety critical parts used by DoD and Commercial OEMs
including ENSIP and safe-life methodologies
- Turbine engine airfoil Goodman diagram limits establishment
including aeromechanics data plotting, test verification standards
and methods, finite element methods & strain gauge instrumentation,
FOD limits, and combined stress assessments
- Aeromechanics test & analysis including aero damping, turbine
blade damping, and NSMS / strain gauge instrumentation
- High-cycle fatigue (HCF) and low-cycle fatigue (LCF) failure
modes and combinations including resonance, cycle counting /
limitations and cumulative damage methods
- Experience with FEA modeling of rotating turbine engine
components (for a modeling SME)
- Risk analyses including calculating HRI using Weibull and Monte
Carlo analyses
- Proficient in English and with MS Office tools to communicate
ideas effectively.
- Must be energetic, creative and take initiative; able to work
well independently or as part of a team
- Occasional travel may be required to support on-site events
Preferred Skills:
Propulsion system structures and fatigue life management experience
in the following areas:
o Vibration analysis
o Turbine durability lifting methods for TMF, oxidation, erosion,
and TBC coatings
o Stress analysis and fatigue of an-isotropic materials including
single crystal metals and composites
o Rotor-dynamics
o Campbell diagrams including effect of, mistuning, integral and
non-integral vibrations
o Airfoil creep analysis
o Probabilistic design systems
