The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce an exciting opportunity to serve as a Sign Crew Member on our Northern Regional Operations Team in NOVA District.Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:Sign Installation and Maintenance - Install and maintain ground-mounted and overhead signs and other traffic control devices in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Follow guidelines and policies governing miss utility clearances for sign installations. Interpret roadway plans and sketches for new sign installation.Job Safety - Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.Emergency Operations - Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialty equipment and complex machinery used in sign installation and messaging.Skill in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.Safety shoes required.Preferred QualificationsExperience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repairs. Overhead sign installation is a plus.Experience in emergency operations to include snow and ice removal, storms and debris clean-up.Experience in the installation and maintenance of various types of traffic control devices.Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.Special RequirementsThis position requires a fingerprint based Criminal History Background Check, DMV Record Check and Work History Verification with references.This position is designated as essential, employees are required to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.Applicants selected for an interview that have a CDL will be required to perform a skills demonstration as part of the interview process.Approved Safety Shoes are required. There is an opportunity for reimbursement.Employees are required to obtain and maintain certifications as listed in minimum qualifications.Candidates may also be required to complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen.The Commonwealth of Virginia requires all Executive Branch employees, including new hires, rehires or transfers to disclose their vaccination status upon hire.
