(Essential) MH Residential Counselor I - Home Road Supervised
Supervises and provides independent living skills instruction to
individuals who have serious and persistent mental illness and live
in a supervised residential facility or home setting on a 24/7
basis. Work is performed under regular supervision and is guided by
well-established and specific agency policies and procedures,
quality assurance, professional practices and including ethical
standards related to client interactions.
Mental Health Services
Job Duties and Responsibilities
1. Instructs residents in basic independent living skills
including: mobility; hygiene and self-care; home maintenance and
safety; nutrition and home economics; social behavior and
communication and functional academics; personal banking and money
2. Leads residents in social and leisure activities.
3. Assists residents with physician appointments.
4. Transports residents.
5. Dispenses and records resident medications.
6. Records residents' progress notes and communicates resident's
behavior to relieving staff members.
7. Provides supportive level counseling and refers problems to
appropriate staff members as required.
8. Acts as liaison with family members and other concerned parties
on behalf of the residents.
9. Greets visitors and supervises visitation to the facility.
10. Secures the facility per policies.
11. Monitor individual service plans in collaboration with
resident, his/her family, and other service providers, as
appropriate, under supervision of the Supervised Apartment
12. Provides timely and accurate documentation of Individual
Service Plans, telephone contacts, funding requirements, DBHDS
requirements, and other information to meet program, agency
licensing and Medicaid billing requirements.
13. Provides overnight supervision to Apartment residents,
responding to resident needs as necessary.
14. Performs supportive and administrative tasks to include cooking
meals, kitchen clean up, running errands for residents, picking up
supplies and medications, assisting with daily facility clean

17. Does related work as assigned.
Considerable knowledge of the practices and methods related to the
instruction of the long-term mentally ill population including
behavior management, independent living skills training and
supportive counseling; considerable knowledge of human rights of
the individual; considerable knowledge of common housekeeping
practices; some knowledge of the operation of electronic medical
records and associated documentation; ability to physically assist
residents; ability to prepare accurate resident records; ability to
establish rapport with SMI individuals and their families; ability
to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with
other staff; ability to communicate effectively orally and in
writing; ability to function calmly in stressful situations;
ability to observe, assess and record individual behaviors and
functioning; ability to operate a vehicle; ability to effectively
respond to crisis situations both behavioral and medical.
Associate's degree in related field and at least one year
experience providing direct services to individuals with a
diagnosis of mental illness; OR a high school diploma and at least
one year experience providing direct service to adults with a
diagnosis of mental illness (including 12 weeks of supervised
experience under QMHP ).
Valid Virginia driver's license
Must possess all qualifications and skills required by federal and
state regulations to bill Medicaid for the services provided.
Relationships require good communication and interpersonal skills
to solicit information from and communicate information to program
participants and families and collaborate with other care
Work involves considerable exposure to disagreeable environmental
conditions such as the requirements to: interact with clients
having unsanitary behaviors, poor hygiene and contagious illness
and/or are potentially hostile and/or aggressive; drive a vehicle,
and/or transport clients in inclement, if not severe weather; and
lifting moderate to heavy weight objects in connection with
assisting participants with household moves.
Shift Type/Hours Worked
Rotating shifts consisting of days, evenings, overnights, weekends
and holidays in a 24/7 program.
$14.41 per hour
