The Nurse Practitioner will provide primary and preventative health care guidance for employees of the department as well as assisting with physical examinations. Tasks are performed in accordance with State and City regulations, rule and procedures and National Fire Protection Association Standard 1500- Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program. The Nurse Practitioner will work within a structured para-military chain-of-command reporting directly to the Deputy Chief of Health, Safety and Risk Management. What You Should Bring As the Fire Department Nurse Practitioner, you should bring the following essential skills to the position; compassion, critical thinking, attention to detail, adaptability and a commitment toward program development. As a fire department nurse practitioner, you should demonstrate an enthusiasm about the specialty of working with fire department employees who provide emergency fire and medical services along with employees who deliver fire prevention and life safety services and fire investigations. The Opportunity - Examples of Work Monitor and coordinate medical processes associated with injuries, illnesses, exposures and employee health for both job and non-job issues, inclusive of employee health assessments. The Nurse Practitioner will provide medical guidance and counsel with regard to current and new employees' ability to meet the medical requirements prior to candidate employees entering department recruit training program or current incumbent employees participating in operational duties. Applying process functions of an occupational case nurse manager the nurse practitioner will; Assist with scheduling and attend doctor appointments. Work closely with Third Party Administrator- Case Manager for work flow process and progress. Maintain progress on recovery criteria from post-surgical, physical therapy and all components of the workers compensation system. Verify fitness for duty and/or functional capacity evaluation compliance for return to work criteria. Assist with OSHA law requiring proper lost time and transfer of duty time reporting. Work with non-job related restricted duty personnel to monitor if proper medical related information is presented and vetted for full return to work. Work with employee for non-job related medical oversight with primary care physician (PCP) of employee, so that PCP fully understands return to work criteria, job duties, job classification specifics and related fitness for duty criteria. Review and assess candidate personnel and incumbent employee medical history The Nurse Practitioner will work with non-job related restricted duty personnel to ensure proper medical related information is presented and vetted for full return to work. In addition, the position will consult with employee for non-job related medical oversight with primary care physician (PCP) of employee, so that the PCP fully understands return to work criteria, job duties, job classification specifics and related fitness for duty criteria. Determines diagnosis and develops treatment plans. The Nurse Practitioner will organize, schedule and oversee annual medical physicals for incumbent and medical physicals for new hires. While reviewing any failure of the annual respiratory protection screening results as provided for each department employee, the Nurse Practitioner will provide medical guidance and serve as a resource regarding the Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program. Annual and ongoing medical physicals: Organize, schedule and oversee annual medical physicals for incumbent and medical physicals for new hires. Review any failure of the annual respiratory protection screening results as provided for each department employee. Provides guidance and expertise regarding employee education for health, wellness and fitness. Provide medical guidance and serves as a resource regarding the Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program. Provide medical guidance and serves as a resource regarding the Standard on Health-Related Fitness Program for Fire Department Members. Will provide direction to the health and wellness workgroup to identify health, wellness and fitness needs and operations to enhance the employees' ability to perform occupational activities and reduce the risk of injury, disease, and premature death. Provide medical guidance and serves as a resource regarding the application of the Work Performance Evaluation and Candidate Physical Abilities Testing. Provide medical guidance and resources with regard to the development and application for pre and post rehabilitation criteria. Provide guidance, resources and assistance to individuals regarding the ability to maintain health and wellness practices and/or recovery from injury. Coordinate appropriate referrals for employees that include medical services providers and wellness fitness personnel. Schedule, coordinate and help employees in conjunction with the Wellness Fitness Initiative to develop health and fitness goals for individual cases and department personnel. Connect results of annual medical physical, Work Performance Evaluation and injury data to provide a health and wellness risk assessment for each employee. Provides access to needed literature in the development of treatment plans. The Nurse Practitioner will provide guidance, resources and assistance to individuals regarding maintaining health and wellness practices and/or recovery from injury. Develops and updates protocols/procedures to maintain compliance with standard of practice in the state of Virginia. The Nurse Practitioner will oversee Infection Control and serve as a Designated Control Officer and deliver OSHA mandated annual blood borne and air borne pathogen training. In addition, the position will oversee vaccination and immunization program and deliver vaccinations as needed. These programs are regularly cited by OSHA as non-compliant. Maintain records according to OSHA and NFPA 1581 and create and maintain an Exposure Control Plan for the fire department and update as required on an annual basis. Performs related work as required which will include but is not limited to: Medical risk assessment regarding current and new employees' ability to meet the medical requirements prior to candidate employees entering into department recruit training program or current incumbent employees participating in operational duties. Must maintain professional development. Develop and updates health, safety and risk management protocols to maintain compliance with standards of practice and fire service best practices. Participation in team meetings to plan policy and procedure implementation, strengthening the function of the health, safety and risk management section of the fire department. Conduct quality assurance activities to assure consistency within the health, safety and risk management section of the fire department. About the Department The Alexandria Fire Department provides fire, emergency medical services, and special operations such as technical rescue, hazardous materials and marine response operations with additional capabilities including fire prevention, inspections, protection and investigation to a 15 square mile city. The Alexandria Fire Department employs more than 290 personnel, which include firefighters, paramedics, fire prevention staff and administrative support. A network of ten stations protects 15 square miles. Among the department's specialized teams are the Northern Virginia Regional Hazardous Materials Team, Technical Rescue, Marine Operations and the Special Operations Team. The Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is also a city-wide function within the Alexandria Fire Department. Minimum & Additional Requirements: A Master's Degree and an active State of Virginia Nurse Practitioner license. Preferred Qualifications: Experience as a Nurse Practitioner within the Fire Service and/or General Public Safety and experience with Health and Wellness Activities.
