Job Title: Senior Surgical TechnologistLocation: The George Washington University Hospital, Washington, DCPOSITION DESCRIPTION: As a Senior Surgical Technologist at The George Washington University Hospital, you will play a vital role in our Level One Trauma Center's surgical team. Working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, you will assist surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in delivering exceptional patient care during surgical procedures. Your expertise and leadership will contribute to maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and quality in our operating rooms. Sign On Bonus $7,500. Relocation bonus in accordance wtih guidelines.
Qualifications

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Preparation and Set-up: Ensure all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are sterile and readily available for each procedure. Set up operating rooms according to specific surgical requirements, including positioning surgical tables, adjusting lights, and arranging surgical instruments.
  • Assistance During Surgery: Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, holding retractors, and anticipating their needs. Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery to minimize the risk of infections and complications.
  • Instrumentation and Equipment Management: Properly handle and care for surgical instruments, ensuring they are cleaned, sterilized, and stored appropriately. Regularly inspect equipment for damage or malfunction, reporting any issues to the appropriate personnel for maintenance or replacement.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate closely with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth workflow and effective communication during surgeries. Provide support and guidance to less experienced surgical technologists to promote their professional growth and development.
  • Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies in the operating room, including administering CPR, controlling bleeding, and assisting with patient stabilization as needed.
  • Adherence to Protocols and Regulations: Adhere to hospital policies, protocols, and regulatory requirements related to surgical procedures, infection control, and patient safety. Maintain confidentiality of patient information and uphold ethical standards in all interactions.
  • Continuing Education and Training: Stay current with advances in surgical technology, techniques, and best practices through ongoing education and training. Participate in departmental meetings, workshops, and seminars to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance: Participate in quality assurance initiatives and performance improvement activities to enhance the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of surgical services. Ensure compliance with accrediting agencies' standards and guidelines.QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of commitment, with the ability to sustain employment for a minimum of two years. This requirement underscores our dedication to fostering long-term relationships with our team members and ensuring stability within our organization.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a surgical technologist, preferably in a Level One Trauma Center or similar high-volume surgical environment.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and sterile techniques.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, with a commitment to patient safety and quality care.
  • Proficiency in using surgical equipment and technology, including electronic medical records (EMRs) and imaging systems.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
